Not for the first time, Kent has doubts about the case, forcing him to make choices. But who do you trust when everyone has something to hide?

Review

We’ve had our fair share of sleuths through the years. They vary in skill from private investigators to amateur detectives. They span the spectrum from serious troubled PI’s all the way through detective cats. Where is Mr. Kent Fisher on this spectrum? He has a great love for animals (and even runs an animal sanctuary), he has great investigative skills he developed as an environmental health inspector, he has a dark past, and is surrounded by beautiful and powerful women. I think he fits in with all the “greats” of crime fiction quite perfectly as an interesting sleuth with a clear voice and style.

This novel does not begin with a dead body, rather a cold case and a tenacious detective pull Fisher in. Like the title suggests this part of the Kent Fisher Series is all about discovering hidden secrets. The lies surrounding Kent threaten to unravel many relationships in his life (and his weakness for beautiful women is not doing him any favors). He finds himself playing a “double agent” caught between a powerful businessman and a fallen from grace detective out to get her job back. And neither of them has been known to pull punches or to have a “clean” record…

Overall, this is a fast paced novel. I will definitely be visiting the other parts of the series to truly appreciate all that Fisher has going on with his life (and trust me it’s A LOT). While I found myself often wishing for some time to pause and think in the end it was completely worth it. A truly well written exploration of how even the smallest lies and omissions can have huge consequences.

About the Author

Inspired by Miss Marple, Inspector Morse and Columbo, Robert Crouch wanted to write entertaining crime fiction the whole family could enjoy.

At their heart is Kent Fisher, an environmental health officer with more baggage than an airport carousel. Passionate about the environment, justice and fair play, he’s soon embroiled in murder.

Drawing on his experiences as an environmental health officer, Robert has created a new kind of detective who brings a unique and fresh twist to the traditional murder mystery. With complex plots, topical issues and a liberal dash of irreverent humour, the Kent Fisher mysteries offer an alternative to the standard police procedural.

Robert now writes full time and lives on the South Coast of England with his wife and their West Highland White Terrier, Harvey, who appears in the novels as Kent’s sidekick, Columbo.
